Surfer Song captures the energy, movement, and magnificent power of a barreling wave. I am drawn to the tension between freedom, beauty, and peril found in big-wave surfing. The experience of being inside the barrel, considered the pinnacle of wave riding, is particularly fascinating to me.
A barreling wave curls over itself to form a hollow, tunnel-like space, which a skilful surfer inhabits for a few glorious moments. That same sense of excitement, release, and total immersion mirrors my experience when I am fully in the zone, painting. In those instances, I work with pure confidence and raw emotion, allowing my mind to go quiet.
